CHRISTMAS LIGHTS:  We hope everyone has enjoyed the Christmas lights on the shelter at the park.   Perhaps each year the display can grow.   We welcome any ideas, volunteers or donations toward those projects.   Thanks to Ray Hamblin for the present display.   Also thanks to the many residents who have decorated their homes for the Christmas season. They are a beautiful display.

IN REMEMBRANCE:  We would like to extend our sympathies to the family of Roseann Podpechan and Frances Marie (Petelinski) Buchanan who were Franklin residents and passed away this past month.   We value the importance of all of our residents (past and present).

PLANNING & LAND USE: (Ray Hamblin 620-347-4228)

Ÿ          Pavers:  The pavers are an on-going project.  Our 3rd order is underway.  They are a nice way to leave a permanent remembrance for your family, school class, business, organization, memorial or whatever you choose.

Ÿ         Storm Siren:   Testing will be every other Wednesday at noon.  The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department will be  in charge of setting off the siren

Ÿ         Community Work Day:  Mark your calendars for April 21.  We’ll be sprucing up the town in preparation for the centennial and completing some projects at the park.  Please come and help.  If you know of any organizations who would be willing to help us on that day please let Ray know.

BARGAIN BAZAAR & CHILI FEED:  Mark your calendars for March 3.   We will be holding the annual bargain bazaar (rummage sale) on that date.   Last year’s event held in June at the park was a huge success thanks to the co-operation of all the residents and the hard-working group of volunteers.  Since the centennial celebration will be held in June we will be holding the Bargain Bazaar earlier this year at the community center.  In conjunction with the bazaar we will hold a chili feed as a fund raiser.    We will begin accepting donations of items after the first of the year.   We will be unable to accept large furniture and large appliances.   Small furniture and appliances will be accepted.    Donate those unwanted Christmas gifts, antiques, small kitchen items, toys, sports equipment, kitchenware, etc.  All proceeds will benefit the community of Franklin.  How you can help: Stop by for dinner, shop at the bargain bazaar, donate items for the sale, volunteer to help with set up, help the day of the sale, help with cleanup or work in the kitchen.  Call Marion at 347-8444 or Phyllis at 249-9333.

CHRISTMAS PARTY:   The 7th Annual Franklin Community Christmas Party was a huge success. Local residents enjoyed a special afternoon.  Thanks to Crawford County RWD #7, Franklin Community Council, Inc., and Cukjati Farms who continue to sponsor this event.  Thanks to them the community enjoys the true spirit of Christmas.    The day was made special by a visitor from the North Pole as Santa stopped by with gifts for the children.  Pictures of the event will be on the website soon.

HISTORICAL CONTRIBUTORS:  Thanks to Lorine M. Blessant for the pictures and invoice from Franklin Garage (Battitori’s).   Thanks to the generosity of those who want to insure that the history of Franklin is documented and remains in the community for future generations to enjoy.    We continue our search for family, business, veteran and other Franklin photos.   Please contact Phyllis at 347-8387 or 249-9333 if you have photos that can be copied and used for displays in the community center or if you have items to donate.

EXCITING NEWS FOR FRANKLIN  Joan Hornig, well known New York jewelry designer, is lending a helping hand to Franklin, Kansas.    Joan has designed a piece of jewelry specifically for Franklin. The design is a silver leaf (ginkgo) motif and is on a leather cord.   The sterling silver necklace is available locally only at Occasions, 508 N. Broadway, Pittsburg at a special price of $75.   There are only 18 necklaces available.  They will not be reproduced and were made specifically for Franklin for this event.  One necklace will also be placed at auction during the centennial celebration.  In addition to the necklaces Joan has also donated a magnificent Sterling Silver Double Cuff.  The bracelet is one of a kind and can only be purchased at the celebrity auction to be held during the Centennial Celebration.  The value of the bracelet is estimated at over $500.   The items have been donated by Joan.  Occasions is donating 100% of the proceeds to benefit Franklin Community Council, Inc. All proceeds are used for the rebuilding and recovery of the community.  This will be a great opportunity for area residents to obtain a piece of jewelry by a well known designer.  Her jewelry is normally sold on 5th Avenue in New York City.  These pieces will make beautiful gifts and will always hold a special meaning to the gift giver and the recipient.  These are a very limited production and are only available through Occasions.   Remember that there are 18 pieces, they will not be duplicated, they were made specifically for Franklin, they come with a certificate of authenticity and are available only at Occasions.    Go to the Franklin website for photos and more information.  www.franklinkansas.com

FRANKLIN COLLECTIBLES:  Occasions, 508 N. Broadway, Pittsburg will also be carrying other Franklin collectibles that make great gifts.   Hat/Lapel pins commemorating the tornado in two styles, the Franklin logo and the Centennial Logo are now in stock.   2007 calendars which feature many historic photos and the centennial tapestry will soon be available.  The centennial cookbook will be arriving shortly after the first of the year.  All of these items are available through Occasions, 508 N. Broadway,  Pittsburg.   While shopping at Occasions be sure to thank Lynda for her generosity in selling these items for the community and donating the proceeds to us.

PRIZE TICKETS:  Grand prize for the centennial drawing will be $1,000 with many other cash and merchandise prizes.  If you are interested in selling (or purchasing)  tickets please contact Margaret Kennedy at 347-4358.   They are also available through board members.  One great idea we received was to purchase the tickets and give them as a gift.   Money raised from this event will help to pay off the hall debt.  Let’s all work together to support the community center.

FAMILY INFO:  Don’t forget to send in your family information (date of settling in Franklin, memories, etc)

FINANCE: (Paul Christman)

Please help us with paying off the debt from the community center construction in any way you can. Donations can be sent directly to: FCCI, P.O. Box 43, Franklin, Ks. 66735.  All donations are tax deductible.

Endowment Fund:  This will ensure that Franklin has the proper funding to continue its activities, etc. for years to come.    Anyone can make a donation to the endowment fund.  With an initial donation of $100 a fund is set up in your name or your family’s name and the name is placed on a plaque in the community center.   The fund can be added to at any time (and in any amount)  and is an especially nice way to remember a family on special occasions such as date of birth, wedding anniversary, date of death, etc.    Anyone can donate any amount at any time in memory of these names or you can establish a fund in your own family name.   These funds will ensure that future programs in Franklin will continue.  This money is managed by the Greater Kansas City Area Foundation of which we are a sub-fund.  The funds are placed in a secure account with the intention of using the interest for future expenses and programs.

VOLUNTEERS:   New volunteers are always welcome. Thanks to those who have volunteered and are helping with a variety of events and activities.  Your help is greatly appreciated.  Contact any board member if you’d like to volunteer.
