Franklin Community Newsletter

January, 2008                Community Center 620-347-4220

We would like to extend our sympathies to the families of the following people who were residents or former residents of Franklin and passed away this past month.   We value the importance of all our residents (past and present).   In memory of Melvin “Dale” Dowty and Dustin G. Walker.

Help!!!   I’m lost!!

This cat has been found in the area of the community center and we’d like to find its proper home.  If anyone has lost her please let us know.  She is expecting kittens.  If you’d like to provide a safe home for her please call the center (347-4220).  We are taking care of her at the center but it’s not a very safe place for a mother cat with all the traffic.  She’s a very sweet and loving cat.   Would make a great pet!

REUNION (June 21, 2008)

Please call the community center if you plan to attend the reunion in June.   This is a test run to see if there is any interest in holding this event.   If there is not enough interest we may postpone it due to the May 4 celebration which many plan to attend.

I am only one, but I am one.  I cannot do everything, but I can do something.  And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do

FCCI ANNUAL MEETING

Thanks to all those who attended the annual meeting.  We welcome the new residents and appreciate their attendance.   Thanks to Dale Yaeger & Michael Kramer for presenting an update regarding the sewer project.   The project is now in the hands of the County Commission.   FCCI Directors who will serve new 3 year terms are David Chandler, Henry Ashbacher and Craig Stokes.   The board would like to welcome David as its newest member and we know he’ll bring new ideas and enthusiasm to the organization.  We also welcome Peggy (Kobak) Dorio as the new Community Center Rental Manager. Peggy is a former Franklin resident who has just moved back to the area.   Peggy will oversee all rentals at the Community Center.   We thank Michael Johnson for stepping up and volunteering to oversee the park.  We welcome him to the organization and are grateful for all those who have chosen to become an active part of the council.    We look forward to working with all the new active members.

Committee appointments for 2008 are:  Funeral Dinners (Marion Kobak); Polka Party & Dances (Norine Laird);  Lifelong Friends  (Margaret Kennedy): Park & Lawn Care (Michael Johnson); Community Picnics (Doris Morlock); Heritage Museum (Phyllis Bitner); Bargain Bazaars (Marion Kobak); Veterans Events (Phyllis Bitner).

The RWD #7 wants to remind everyone that at this time of year you need to protect your water meter from freezing during the winter months.  Make sure the meter lid fits down tightly on the tile to keep out the cold wind.  You could also place a sack or plastic bag with leaves on top of the meter for extra insulation.  Also, if you sell your property you must have the Benefit Unit Certificate transferred to the new owners.  If you can't find your Certificate call Veda at 347-4747 and she will issue you a duplicate.  If you fail to do this you will remain liable for any debts incurred by the new owners.  Your cooperation is greatly appreciated

BARGAIN BAZAAR & CHILI FEED

 (March 1, 2008)

Plan now for our annual bargain bazaar & chili feed.  This has become a very big annual event.   Please help support the council in providing programs that benefit the entire area.    Fund raising proceeds help keep the community center, park and welcome sign in operation.  Special events are also funded by the proceeds.   We thank everyone for their support.   Donate your items, shop on the day of the sale or stop by for some of Leroy Younger’s famous chili. (Carryouts available)   We will begin accepting items February 20 so start cleaning out those closets and saving your items to donate.  All proceeds go to benefit the community.  Please help us make this a success.  No “junk” accepted.  Please do not make us a trash drop off. We will accept clean, usable items.   If you have items to be picked up please call the center (347-4220) and arrangements will be made.   .

HELP NEEDED February 26, Tuesday

We will be setting up for the Bargain Bazaar and need strong backs to help set up tables, clothing racks, move boxes from the storage building as well as organize the storage building. We also need someone capable of building a few shelves (nothing fancy) in the storage building.  Please call the office (347-4220) if you are able to help on this date or just be there at 9 am on Tuesday, February 26.       Thanks to those who see something that needs to be done and takes care of it!  They have an attitude that this is their community and step up when something needs to be done.  We appreciate their help.

LIFELONG FRIENDS       (Margaret Kennedy    620-347-4358)

February 21

Watch newspaper for time and further information or call the office  620-347-4220. The January meeting was attended by a large group.  Everyone enjoyed the luncheon and took part in a survey to decide what future activities would be held.   The rest of the afternoon was spent playing bingo, dominoes, pinochle and other games

If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito

CONTRIBUTORS
Thanks to Veda Maxwell for the coffee pot and to John Nepote for the tools.  The beautiful new glass display case next to the stage was donated by Polona & Marie (Mary) Podpechan Straus in memory of the Podpechan family.  The big screen TV was donated by the Kranker family in memory of Don Kranker who was active on the board and served as Park Chairman.   The DVD player was donated by Robert Luth.   These items are a tremendous asset to the center and we thank all those who made the donations.   We will now have the ability to view slide shows at special events (weddings, birthdays, community events, etc.)    Our facilities are truly “Community” facilities as everyone continues to pitch in.    ITEMS NEEDED:   Our kitchen needs a few supplies (large stock pots and any large pans, cookie sheets, roasters, crock pots and other kitchen items.)      We’re looking for decorating items for events at the hall (Christmas, Valentines, Easter, etc.)   We also are in need of general lawn and garden equipment such as a wheelbarrow, hand truck, etc.    We need general maintenance tools such as hammers, screw drivers, etc.  If you have any of these items that you aren’t using please consider donating them to the center and they will be put to good use. (Bring items to the community center)

FRANKLIN COMMUNITY CENTER & HERITAGE MUSEUM

Monday-Wednesday 10 am-8pm       Thursday-Saturday 10 am-3pm

Please note the new name for the center.   Our historic displays have been widely viewed and the center has become a great place to bring friends and relatives.    Many people have been making use of the new office hours.   Visitors & residents have stopped by to view the center and spent hours browsing through the historic displays and photo albums.   Please feel free to stop in anytime during normal business hours.  Thanks to those who continue to help us in our quest of saving historical items and documents relating to Franklin.  We are dedicated to preserving the history of the community and appreciate support toward these projects.

CENTENNIAL & FRANKLIN Collectibles

Always available for purchase at the community center.  Keep in mind when you need a special gift.

MORE WAYS TO HELP

FCCI has a booth space in the new Iron Wheel Flea Market as a fund raiser.  If you have antiques or collectibles that you would like to donate please drop them by the community center during normal business hours or call to make arrangements for pickup.  This is a great way to support your favorite non-profit and to help with the community.  All proceeds go 100% directly to programs that benefit the community.
