Franklin Community Newsletter

March,  2008                    www.franklinkansas.com

We would like to extend our sympathies to the families of the following people who were residents or former residents of Franklin and passed away this past month.   We value the importance of all our residents (past and present).

In memory of Leo Kobak and Rudy Moutz.

We would also like to extend our sympathies to Carolyn Hartman and her husband Jim.  Carolyn works in the Community Center office. Her mother passed away this month.   We also send our get well wishes to Mildred Hunter who works in the office. She fell and broke her arm and will be off work for several weeks.

VANDALISM

Parents!  Please speak with your children. There have been several instances of vandalism at the park and community center.   It is a great joy to see the number of children and families using the park.   The park was built with numerous volunteer hours and many donations. We will be keeping extra watch on these areas.  Volunteers work hard to provide a great facility and park for everyone to use. It would be a shame for 1 or 2 mischievous children to ruin that for everyone.   Our trees that we planted to provide shade for future generation have been broken off at the top.  What may have provided shade in the next few years will now take a much longer time.  Trees and landscaping are such an integral part of the part as they provide homes from wildlife, shade and aesthetic beauty.  It is a shame that such a senseless and hateful act of vandalism happened at our park.   A gate was broken and there were several other malicioius acts.  The vandalism is costly and volunteers are stretched to the limit already to keep our facilities in tip top shape.   If you see anyone that appears to be causing a problem please contact any of the board members or the Sheriff’s Department.  The Sheriff’s Deparment is aware of the problem and will be patrolling and making arrests as necessary.  We want everyone to be able enjoy this beautiful park!

<>5th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony & Severe Weather Symposium

You won’t want to miss this!  This will be a special day for the area.  The symposium is being organized by Joey Ketcham, well known storm chaser for the area.  FCCI is a co-organizer.  The event will cover events that occurred in all of Crawford County. Great speakers, fascinating displays, door prizes given throughout the day, free to the public, food available for purchase.

  <>PARK

Thanks once again to M & I Bank, Pittsburg and the trustees of Pritchett Trust.  A grant was award to FCCI for more equipment at the park and other items needed to complete the project.  A plaque is placed in the Memorial Garden in honor of the William and Athlyn Pritchett.

NEEDS

We are in need of a wheelbarrow, a cart to hook on the back of the lawn mower and general tools such as hammer, screw drivers, pliers, rakes (garden & leaf).  If you have any of the above or any other general tools that are in your garage and not being used please consider donating them to FCCI for use in maintaining the park, community center and welcome sign area.

BARGAIN BAZAAR & CHILI FEED

Thanks to all those who helped make our annual fund raising event such a huge success.  A special thank you to Pat (Tassi) McKee and her National Honor Society students who worked very hard and helped with the set up.  We could not have done it without them.  Thanks to LeRoy Younger for once again cooking the chili.  There are still a few quarts left in the freezer.  If you would like one just call the office (347-4220) and you can pick one up for $5.  Great way to have a quick supper!  And thanks especially to the ladies who worked the entire week prior to the sale in preparation for this big event as well as the day of the event.  These ladies are such an asset to the community and work very hard to keep the facilities and programs going.

<>There is no way to individually thank everyone who donated items for the Bargain Bazaar.  A huge thank you goes to those who helped make this annual fund raiser such a success.   We appreciate your kindness and support.
